The human palatine tonsils and the nasopharyngeal tonsil are lymphoepithelial tissues located in strategic areas of the oropharynx and nasopharynx, although mostly the time period "tonsils" refers back to the palatine tonsils [that might be seen at the back of the throat]. These immunocompetent tissues represent the protection mechanism of first line towards ingested or inhaled overseas pathogens. Nevertheless, the elemental immunological roles of tonsils have yet to be addressed.
